Craving carbs this Winter? Are You Experiencing SAD?
It is that time of year when it gets dark even before you've finished work, the mornings are crisp, and you can't leave the house without your gloves. Some people love the cold winter months. But for others, the long, dark and gloomy days can bring dramatic shifts in mood and wellbeing.
SAD or seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that shows up during the winter months. One of the symptoms of this form of depression can be an increase in appetite and in particular, cravings for starchy, carb-rich foods. So people experiencing SAD may notice weight gain over the winter months.
Other signs and symptoms of the condition can include:
an ongoing low mood
a loss of interest in things that you usually enjoy
feeling irritable or angry
getting teary or crying a lot
finding it hard to wake up in the morning or feeling very sleepy or lethargic during the day
finding it hard to focus and concentrate
having a lower than usual sex drive.
If you have been experiencing these symptoms for a few weeks or more and they are having an impact on your day-to-day life, it can be helpful to get some support from your GP or a mental health professional. We often work with individuals that have noticed changes in their eating patterns and weight gain, often without realising that this is connected to their low mood and SAD symptoms.
It is not clear exactly what causes SAD but experts suggest that it may be caused by less sun exposure over the autumn and winter. (If you needed an excuse for a winter holiday you officially have it too). Treatments for and tools to manage SAD can include:
talking therapy such cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
light therapy
antidepressant medication which can be prescribed by your GP
regular exercise
eating a nutrient-dense diet (such as the Mediterranean diet)
relaxation tools such as meditation and hypnotherapy.

“Winter is a time to slow. To grab hold of that wheel that spins your days too quickly and give it a firm tug. To let your thoughts catch up with your body. To pin down that idea that’s been circling your mind for months. To remember that life isn’t an emergency.” — Kelsi Turner
